Since 1986 I have made work with corrugated cardboard — a humble material. My process is much like an insect. I build instinctively and often mindlessly. I let the work tell me where to go. By working in this way, I create a body of work that constantly explores creativity. I believe that the public often misunderstands the process of art making. They think that the artist begins with an idea that is fully formed in their minds and then they execute the work. For me creativity comes from the act of doing / making.

The use of cardboard is the starting place for understanding the work, but cardboard is not what you see at first glance. The pieces often present as something from nature: lichen, burls, seaweed, wasp nests.

This is my 14th year of running an alternative art gallery, The Re Institute, in Millerton NY. The goal of the space is to allow artists to see growth in their understanding of their own work from their unique use of this large dairy barn. I have fostered an art community that promotes conversation between individuals around art making and viewing.
